Cookie Policy
Last updated: June 2026
1. Our approach
We try to respect your privacy. Most of what we measure is anonymous and uses no cookies at all: we count visits and basic, aggregated usage in a way that does not identify you and stores nothing on your device. For anything beyond that, we ask first. You stay in control: open Cookie settings at any time (the tab on the left edge of the screen, or the link in the footer) to change your choices.
2. What are cookies and similar technologies?
Cookies are small files stored on your device. Similar technologies include things like local storage. Under the EU ePrivacy rules (and UK PECR) we need your consent for anything that is not strictly necessary. We remember your consent choice for up to 180 days, then ask again.
3. Categories you can control
| Category | On by default? | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Necessary | Always on | Makes the blog work and stay secure, and remembers your cookie choice. Includes anonymous, cookieless usage statistics. |
| Preferences | Off until you allow | Optional embeds, for example the Spotify podcast player inside some articles. |
| Analytics | Off until you allow | Google Analytics, to understand how the blog is read so we can improve it. |
| Marketing | Off until you allow | Advertising tools. We do not currently use any. |
4. The specific tools we use
| Tool | Category | Purpose | Stored for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cookie choice (this site) | Necessary | Remembers your consent | Up to 180 days |
| Anonymous usage stats (Cloudflare) | Necessary (no cookie) | Count visits and popular articles | Not stored on your device |
| Spotify podcast player | Preferences | Play the episode embedded in an article | Per Spotify's policy |
| Google Analytics 4 | Analytics | Understand how the blog is read (only when enabled) | _ga up to 2 years, _gid 24 hours |
If you choose Necessary only, the Spotify player and Google Analytics are not loaded and set no cookies. The player then shows a one-click "Enable" placeholder so the rest of the article keeps working.
5. The law
Under the EU GDPR and ePrivacy rules (and UK GDPR / PECR), we ask for consent before loading anything that is not strictly necessary, such as the Spotify player or Google Analytics. Our baseline usage statistics stay anonymous and cookieless, so they do not require consent.
6. Changing or withdrawing your choice
Open Cookie settings at any time, using the tab on the left edge of the screen or the "Cookie settings" link in the footer, to allow or withdraw any category. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings. If you remove the cookie that stores your choice, the banner will appear again on your next visit.
7. Third-party content
Some articles include content from other companies, such as the embedded Spotify podcast player. When you allow it to load, that service may set its own cookies, subject to its own privacy and cookie policies. We do not control those cookies.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be available at this page.
